This year The Howard Shapiro Memorial Fund and Bradstrong are combining their annual charity golf tournaments. The Howard Shapiro Memorial Fund honors the memory of Howard Shapiro and benefits the Lustgarten Foundation for Pancreatic Cancer Research. Bradstrong honors the memory of Brad Coustan and benefits the Multiple Myeloma Research Foundation. Please join us in July to honor these great people and support these great causes.
Howard Shapiro was our father. In April of 1999 he was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer, he passed away 6 weeks later. Pancreatic cancer quickly changed the vivacious, busy man we called Dad to a unrecognizable person dying from an undetected, aggressive and deadly disease.
Determined to help make a difference and honor our father’s memory we established the Howard Shapiro Memorial Fund and joined forces with The Lustgarten Foundation.
The annual HSMF golf tournament has raised over $500,000 for research thanks to the generosity, support, and participation of family and good friends as well as corporations including Active International, Beacon Media, Celgene Corporation, CNN, NBC Universal, Scripps Networks, TF Brokers, Tradition, Turner Sports, Turner Young Adults, Turner Entertainment, Videology, and Yume.
Our Father raised us to work hard, enjoy life and support benevolent causes. He demonstrated the importance of philanthropy by giving his own time and resources to various charities. We will never lose the values that he instilled in us and we will never forget him.
Please join us as we continue our efforts towards the diagnosis, treatment, and cure and prevention of pancreatic cancer.
Kenneth & Deborah Shapiro-Severin
My husband Brad was diagnosed with Multiple Myeloma in November of 2012. He was having back pain and went into the doctor with what he thought was an orthopedic problem and he came out with Cancer. We quickly educated ourselves about the disease and learned that Multiple Myeloma is the second most common blood cancer and it is incurable.
After his diagnosis, Brad was determined to live, work and play as if he didn’t have cancer. So, during his cancer treatment, he not only worked, he mentored patients and coached our kids’ sports teams. Also, as a therapeutic measure, he started a blog bradstrong.me where he wrote about “finding the silver lining in every day.” Soon, he had more than 900 followers reading his daily, inspirational blog posts - and the Bradstrong movement was born.
Additionally, Brad wanted to make a difference by raising awareness and funds to accelerate finding a cure to save his life. So, for two consecutive years he hosted the annual #bradstrong Golfs Against Cancer Golf Tournament to benefit the Multiple Myeloma Research Foundation (MMRF) raising over $130,000 since its inception. Funds raised have helped to: double patient survival, deliver more than six new treatments in less than a decade and bring 24 new treatments into clinical trials.
On June 7, 2015, Brad lost his brave battle with cancer and not a day goes by that our family doesn’t miss him. We couldn’t think of a better way to honor Brad than raising awareness and funds for Multiple Myeloma – we hope you’ll join us in an effort to find a cure.
